There’s no doubt about it: children love to play and frolic about in the sun. However, living in Australia means we are exposed to the sun’s harmful rays much more than other countries. With the ozone layer depleting progressively as each year passes, it’s now more important than ever to ensure we’re doing our best to protect our kid’s skin from the damaging effect of UV radiation when they’re outdoors.

Be sunsmart and slip, slop, slap, seek and slide

While a little bit of sun exposure helps our bodies make Vitamin D and produce calcium, there is such a thing as too much. Your child is especially vulnerable to the sun’s UV rays, and it can cause serious damage to their skin and eyes, as well as wreak havoc with their immune system.

When your little one is outdoors, keep them safe from the sun with these accessories:

    1. Sunglasses: Little eyes need protection from the sun. Look for kid’s sunglasses that are flexible and bend, so your child won’t break them. You can grab a pair in a range of different shapes, such as the classic aviator lens or heart-shaped frames.
    2. Sunscreen: Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen at least 20 minutes before heading outdoors. Don’t forget to reapply their sunscreen every two hours while they’re exposed to the sun, or sooner if they’re swimming or sweating.
    3. Bucket hats: Hats with wide brims will not only protect their face, but also those neglected parts of the body, such as their neck and ears. We have a range ofkids sun hats in a variety of colours and patterns to match your little one’s bright personality. Made from soft material and featuring an elastic toggle around the head for the perfect fit, they’ll love it so much they’ll never want to take their bucket hat off!
    4. Sun-protective clothing: While this may sound counter-intuitive when making a trip to the beach, it’s crucial that your little one doesn’t get sunburnt. Long sleeve shirts, long pants or a loose skirt are all great ideas – as long as they are lightweight and non-restrictive.
  • Shoes: Sand can get super-hot, and it can burn anyone’s soles. Avoid your bub getting sore feet by investing in a pair of sturdy, comfortable and high-qualitykids sandals.
  • One last thing to keep in mind is that if you’re enjoying a day at the beach, the sun is at its peak during the hours of 10am – 4pm. It’s best to avoid the outdoors during these hours. If you can’t, then try to seek shade where possible, taking breaks between time out in the sun.
