Dangling Star Ornaments

This is such a fun and easy activity to do with the kiddies. Hang them on your own tree or give them as gifts to teachers and friends.

Here’s what you will need:

  • 1 Cup Salt
  • 2 Cups Flour
  • 3/4 Cup Water (maybe a little more)
  • Star cookie cutters or any christmas cutters you have to mix it up.
  • Ribbon
  • Bells (optional)
  • Clear Glaze spray to seal (which you can grab from officeworks)

  1. Begin mixing the flour and salt together.
  2. Add the water gradually until it forms a dough. Only add one teaspoon at a time to prevent it from going too sticky.
  3. If it's too dry add one teaspoon of water but if it's too sticky add more flour until you get the right consistency.
  4. Knead the dough until it forms a soft ball. You will need to knead for at least 5-10 minutes to get it to a good consistency. Roll it out to about 1/2 inch in thickness.
  5. Cut out star shapes with a bigger and smaller cookie cutter. Puncture holes in the smaller stars  or other shapes you use to thread ribbon later.
  6.  Place the salt dough shapes on baking paper on an oven tray and bake at 120 degrees for about 2-2.5 hours (Adults only). If the dough is not completely dried out, you can let it bake longer or turn the temperature of the oven slightly up but just keep a close eye on it if you turn the temperature up.
  7. Once they are out and fully cooled you can paint and decorate them or keep them plain.
  8. Then use the sealing spray to help prevent them from cracking.
  9. Last but not least, tie the ribbons and bells around the bigger stars and use string or thinner ribbon through the holes on the top of the tiny star ornaments.

Have fun with these . Such a great idea and the kids love it!
